Catharina Hammelstein
Catharina has always felt a strong connection to music. She started with classical recorder-playing and choral singing, and then, relatively early on, she sat down at a then-boyfriend’s drum kit and just started drumming away. She grew up with rock and metal at home. Rammstein, in particular, brought out a keen interest in drumming in her. Their drummer, Christoph Schneider, was a major influence and role model from the beginning.
Catharina had drum lessons for the first time when she was 11. From age 14, she had regular lessons in various genres with a number of different teachers: everything from pop, rock and metal to individual classical and jazz lessons, to broaden her horizons.
She’s been a student at thePlanetDrum since 2019, and has completed the teacher training, including being trained in our thePlanetDrum teaching method by Mirko Schmitt. She continues to have regular piano, aural training and music theory lessons. She’s been a teacher at thePlanetDrum since January 2022.
Catharina has traveled a lot as a session drummer, and has worked with bands in styles from rock and progressive to world music. Her drumming has a strong stylistic influence from the progressive metal genre (Mastodon, Tool, Dream Theater, Rush, The Police) and from Neue Deutsche Härte (Rammstein). Preferred genres, styles and interests at the drums are progressive and death metal, double bass drumming, classical snare drum studies and general technique.
